Our philosophy is to offer a diverse variety of treatment strategies employing educational, behavioral, dietary, physical therapy and surgery to tailor to our patients’ individualized needs. As a part of UCLA Healthcare system, one of the nation’s leading institutions in healthcare, the Division of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery assists in leading the way with novel clinical research offering the latest minimally invasive techniques to provide improved care to our patients.
Our Program
The program is under the guidance of Director Dr. Christopher Tarnay, a Urogynecologist and an Associate Professor in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Urogynecologists are physicians who have completed three years of specialized training in Women's Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. At UCLA the Women’s Pelvic Medicine and Continence Program offers a coordinated interdisciplinary care that includes primary care physicians, gynecologists, gastrointestinal specialists and colorectal surgeons, all specially trained in diagnosis and in medical and surgical treatments for managing pelvic floor disorders. So you don’t have to arrange for specialists outside on your own.
Pelvic Floor Dysfunction
Being one of the most common problems facing women, pelvic floor dysfunction, may affect approximately 50 percent of all women - the majority of whom may not seek professional help. In addition to urinary incontinence, pelvic floor dysfunction may cause fecal incontinence, sexual dysfunction, vaginal pain or discomfort and abdominal discomfort. Many women experience significant changes in daily activities and even self-identify because of these conditions.
Abnormal function results from a variety of medical conditions as well as normal changes associated with childbirth and aging. Since proper diagnosis is critical to successful correction of the problem, here at The Women’s Pelvic Medicine and Continence Program we use computerized urodynamic testing and cystoscopy in addition to targeted physical examinations to more precisely pinpoint the cause of the disorder.
